Turkish Red Crescent hosts 80 students affected by earthquake in Ankara

The Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay) hosted around 80 students from earthquake-affected areas at its youth camp in Çamkuru, Ankara.

Since 1936, the Turkish Red Crescent continues to reach thousands of young people through its youth camps, which aim to promote solidarity, volunteerism and personal development. In recent years, these camps have given priority to students coming from earthquake zones.

Throughout the summer, camps in Heybeliada, Istanbul, and Çamkuru, Ankara, provide participants with opportunities to participate in various activities, enhance individual and social awareness, and gain insight into the national and international humanitarian efforts of the Red Crescent.

From August 25 to 31, Çamkuru hosted a camp titled “Textile Production and Design”, which welcomed about 80 earthquake-affected girls from Adana, Adıyaman and Osmaniye.

Students participated in workshops on crafts, design, disaster training and first aid, as well as sports, music and drama activities.

They also enjoyed city tours, including visits to the Ataturk Mausoleum and the National Library. Businesswoman Dilek Yildirim, who founded her own brand of handmade products and reached 436 housewives, met the students.

Yildirim, the designer of the Red Crescent’s “A Drop of a Story” project, shared her professional journey from nursing to entrepreneurship and answered students’ questions.

“We do activities all day here, and performing them on stage has increased our initiative and reduced our shyness; the camp environment is beautiful, with activities, trees, fresh air and we are far from the city. The camp has made me happy, and although it is sad to leave it, I recommend it to everyone,” said Irem Akıncı’s friend, a student from Osmaniye.

Yaren Parlak, who came from Adıyaman, said: “The camp made me very happy; I think we need such a natural environment before starting school; we learned crafts and musical instruments, participated in theatrical performances, made many friends and had a lot of fun. I am sad that the camp is ending; I think everyone should come here to relax and develop themselves.”
