Google offers earthquake alerts to all 50 states in the United States

In a recent announcement, Google revealed that its earthquake alerts service for Android will soon be available to all 50 states and six US territories. When the service first launched, it was only available in three states: Washington, Oregon, and California.

The feature will enable access to all compatible Android devices in these locations so they can be alerted seconds before an earthquake strikes. The alerts use traditional seismometers to detect if an earthquake is imminent. But existing government earthquake alert systems are being supplemented by Google to support locations where the USGS ShakeAlert app isn’t available. These locations will get Android devices with built-in accelerometers, which will be able to give residents another level of preparedness.

Google says that when your phone detects a shaking, Android’s earthquake alert system will look at crowdsourced data to see if there’s an earthquake in the area. So far, the system has been able to detect earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater. It will then send one of the following warning alerts:

Attention: There is a weak or slight vibration. Take action: There is a moderate to severe vibration.

As the announcement reveals, this feature will be rolling out in the coming weeks.
