Android Updates: Offline Maps on the Watch and AI Innovations
While the world waits for Apple’s announcement next week and for improvements to its operating system, Google is constantly adding new updates. Today, Google announced five more new updates to Android, including a search circle that helps identify music, offline navigation with your smartwatch, and earthquake alerts.
Here are the five new updates announced by Google:
1. Residents of the United States, and later in other parts of the world, will be able to receive warnings before an earthquake starts. This is a free service that will be able to detect earthquakes and warn you before you even feel them. The warning time, just like our “red light,” will be able to allow access to a protected area and possibly even save a life.
In the event of an earthquake in the area, users will now be able to expect one of two alerts: a Be Aware alert and a Take Action alert. The Be Aware alert is designed to alert you to a mild earthquake with information about the location and strength of the earthquake. The Take Action alert is sent to those who may experience a moderate to severe earthquake, with information on how to protect the user and their family. After the earthquake has passed, you can tap the screen for tips on how to continue being active.
2. Shazam works great for identifying music near you, but if you have a phone with Circle To Search, you can use the new AI feature to identify the music around you from different sounds, whether it's playing in a bar, college, restaurant, during a concert or even on social media, without having to “bring” the device closer to the sound source.
Here's how it works: Long-press the home button or navigation bar to activate the circular search feature, then tap the music button next to the Google search button at the bottom of the screen. The user will receive the name of the track, the artist, and a link to the song on YouTube in Google search results.
3. If you also get stuck in the middle of your commute due to no cellular reception, you can download the navigation route in Google Maps and continue on your way. From now on, offline maps can also be used on the smartwatch. As long as the map is downloaded to your phone, it will be synced to your Android WearOS watch, so you can get to your destination offline without breaking your wrist, even if you leave your phone behind. Google has added two more shortcuts to the Maps app for the smartwatch: you can search for a destination using just your voice, and you can check the surroundings by tapping on the watch face. 4. A new feature that can read any web page, such as a long article or correction, out loud right from within the Chrome browser. You can access a feature called “Listen to this page” from the three-dot menu in the top right corner of any web browser page. Once you enable the feature, you’ll see a player at the bottom of the screen with some playback controls. You can pause or play the audio, skip forward or backward 10 seconds, jump to a desired time, and enable text highlighting and auto-scrolling. You can also change your preferred listening speed, volume, and language. You don’t have to stay on the page to continue listening: you can browse the current site, switch to another tab, or even lock the screen and still hear the web page being read aloud.
5. The latest new feature lets you listen to detailed audio descriptions of images, using Gemini’s AI. You can get detailed audio descriptions of images on your phone or tablet, on supported devices, using TalkBack, Google’s screen reader built into most Android devices that provides audio feedback.
With TalkBack, people with visual difficulties, whether they are blind or have low vision, can use the device without having to look at the screen. You can tap or swipe around the screen, and TalkBack will announce what’s on the screen, including text, buttons, and items. Trivia will also suggest what to do next.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
