The famous Venezuelan karate player lived through the double earthquake that shook her country three weeks ago while she was staying in the city of Valencia. Her apartment was damaged beyond repair, she suffered physical injuries, and most tragically, many of her friends lost their lives. Today, she is struggling to get back on her feet and help those who have lost everything and are in desperate need.

On June 24, Venezuela experienced the worst natural disaster in its history: a double earthquake measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale that affected the entire country.

Numbers don’t lie. To date, 4,560 people have died, 16,740 people have been injured, and more than 17,900 Venezuelans have been left homeless.

Venezuela is now a devastated nation struggling to move forward, yet some individuals, heroes without a cape, are helping with search and rescue efforts, stocking relief centers, and contributing whatever is needed to rebuild the nation from the ground up.

One of these individuals is Claudimar Garcés, who witnessed this tragedy in Carabobo. When the earthquake struck, she was slightly injured while trying to escape, and her apartment was severely damaged. Despite everything, she stands strong and is determined to help people who have lost everything. “I have mixed feelings,” Garces said. “I feel a lot of sadness and fear. Thank God I am okay, but my heart hurts so much for those who lost loved ones. I am doing my small part in trying to help everyone who is suffering.”

“How did you cope with the devastating earthquake, Claudimar?” “I was in Valencia, working for the Venezuelan National Championship, and I was staying in a friend’s apartment on the fourth floor. The earthquake hit me while I was sleeping; I stood in the doorway and then decided to leave. I couldn’t control my body. Things fell on my head and legs. When I came out, it all looked like a movie. Everything was cracking around me, everything was falling – it was really intense. I feared for my life. “I ended up with bloody legs.”

“Is your apartment seriously damaged?” “It is uninhabitable at the moment. The wall separating my bedroom from my living room collapsed, and the air conditioner, TV, and stove fell out. I lost almost all of my possessions and had to move in with my mother. It’s hard, but there are people who have lost so much more than that – their entire homes, their loved ones. “I was so shaken up, I honestly never want to live in a building or apartment again.”

“How have you been trying to cope with this tragedy?” “I feel devastated and sad, but I am convinced that if I am still here, it is because I have a purpose – and I must help the people who need it most. I have lost many friends; “We have lost many people from the Venezuelan karate community and the Venezuelan national teams in all sports.”

There’s also a karate foundation in the US and many people from other countries are helping me with this cause. We’ve made the most of our time by setting up a relief centre, delivering water and food, and providing assistance to those affected.”

Clodimar is one of the most prominent karate players in Venezuela. She won a gold medal at the 2018 Barranquilla Games and the 2025 Lima-Ayacucho Bolivarian Games, is an All-American silver medalist at the 2019 Lima Games, and finished fifth at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

That’s why, despite everything she does to help the most vulnerable people, she had to keep training. Next week, she will compete in the World League Championships in Mexico, then compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, but her main target is set for Lima 2027.

“I have trained hard, and I want to have a perfect Olympics,” she said. “I want to win medals and bring joy to my country, which really needs them,” says Claudimar Garcés. “I will go to Guadalajara, then to the Dominican Republic, where I aim to get the gold medal to qualify for my third Pan-American Games.
