Earthquakes in Delhi, NCR after 5.8 magnitude quake hits Pakistan

Tremors were felt in parts of the national capital on Wednesday afternoon, following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan at 12:58 (IST).

The quake, which struck at a depth of 33 kilometres, caused mild tremors in Delhi and much of northern India, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Tremors were also reported in Islamabad, Lahore and even Afghanistan.

This is the second time in two weeks that Delhi and surrounding areas have been hit by minor tremors. On August 29, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan at a depth of 255 km.

Videos on social media showed the brief tremors, with ceiling fans, chairs and other objects shaking. One user from Bikaner, Rajasthan, commented on the “major tremors felt in Delhi-NCR”.

Delhi's vulnerability to earthquakes is due to its location in an active seismic zone near the Himalayas. The country is divided into four seismic zones, with zone 5 being the most active. Delhi is located in seismic zone 4.

Meanwhile, Delhi has seen a rise in the number of earthquakes over the past few decades.

The most significant seismic event was recorded on July 27, 1960. The incident, which registered a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, caused partial damage to several buildings.

In 2023, the capital is still experiencing earthquakes. Fortunately, the recent tremors were mild, and did not cause any injuries or property damage, unlike the strong earthquake that occurred in 1960.
