Earthquake drills scheduled for Missouri on October 17, 2024 | Weather

(JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.) The Missouri Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) announced Tuesday, September 17, 2024, that Missourians have exactly one month to prepare for the statewide Mo. ShakeOut earthquake drill, scheduled for Oct. 17.

According to Sima Agency,

Southeast Missouri, or the Bothell area, is the epicenter of one of the most active earthquake zones in the country.

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is more than 100 miles wide and experiences an average of more than 200 small earthquakes per year.

Registration is now open for the Great Central US ShakeOut 2024 earthquake training on Thursday, October 17 in Missouri, one of 14 participating states in the central United States that could be impacted by the NMSZ earthquake.

Specialty Emergency Equipment Association (SEMA) Director Jim Remillard spoke about the importance of ShakeOut.

“Missouri is home to a very large and active earthquake zone,” Remillard said. “Earthquakes happen without warning, so it’s important to prepare now. ShakeOut drills are a great opportunity to practice so you know what to do when an earthquake starts.”

At 10:17 a.m. on October 17, Missourians will practice the “drop, cover, hold” technique:

Get down on your hands and knees, and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms under the table or desk if you can; hold on until the shaking stops.

According to the Emergency Management Association of America (SEMA), studies show that in developed countries with modern structures, falling debris is the most common source of injury in an earthquake. Experts advise that when an earthquake occurs in the United States, the “drop, cover, and hold” technique is the best protection from falling debris.

In 1811 and 1812, the NMSZ generated some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history, and seismologists agree that similar quakes remain a threat to this day. The shaking from another major quake in this area would not only be felt by Missourians, but throughout the Midwest, affecting much of the southern and eastern parts of the state, including the St. Louis metropolitan area.
