Thanks to the effective implementation of the national early warning system, more than 129,000 residents received timely alerts before a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Feidong County of Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, at 8:08 p.m. on Wednesday.

The early warning system provided critical warnings, with residents of Hefei City receiving three seconds of advance warning, residents of Quzhou City in Anhui Province receiving 11 seconds of advance warning, and residents of Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, being alerted 26 seconds before the tremors struck. Specialized receiving stations, mobile phones and televisions in all affected areas broadcast warnings, ensuring millions were informed in advance, Science and Technology Daily reported on Thursday.

No casualties were reported after the quake, which struck at 31.98 degrees north latitude and 117.6 degrees east longitude, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday, citing data from the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The earthquake, which had a depth of 12 kilometers, was followed by 49 aftershocks, with the strongest aftershock occurring at 7:58 a.m. on September 19, with a magnitude of 2.6.

In July, China successfully completed its national earthquake early warning project by deploying 15,899 monitoring stations across the country, unveiling the world's largest earthquake early warning network.

The earthquake early warning system relies on a dense network of seismic monitoring stations to issue alerts before destructive seismic waves arrive, Ma Qiang, the project's chief engineer, told the Global Times on Thursday.
