North Carolina officials are studying earthquake damage in Sparta, and looking for ways to rebuild

SPARTA, North Carolina – Sparta has a population of less than 2,000, yet the talk is about the east coast after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook the city and surrounding areas on Sunday morning.

On Monday, people were delaying clean-ups and assessing the damage caused by the natural disaster in hopes of documenting them for future financial aid.

Sparta Mayor Wes Bringar said the state of emergency has been called in so they can apply for FEMA and government financial aid.
