A mild earthquake shook parts of British Columbia on Thursday

Children in parts of British Columbia may have felt the ground shaking this week.

This is because a mild earthquake occurred early in the morning on September 26.

Just after 4 a.m. PT, the 3.8 magnitude quake shook the ground in places like the south coast of Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.

Magnitude is the term used to describe the amount of energy released during an earthquake. The major quake had a magnitude of 7.0, according to the Government of Canada.

In this case, there were no reports of injuries or damage, which is what is expected for an earthquake of this intensity.

Colin Ball is a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada who studies earthquakes.

He said this was “one of the most important events we have seen in the last 10 years.”

The last time an earthquake struck this part of Canada was nine years ago, in 2015, Paul said.

He explained that it is normal for British Columbians to experience an earthquake of this size every 10 years or so.

Earthquake safety tips

Many earthquakes are small and cause only minor tremors, but in some cases, large earthquakes can cause serious damage.

Here are some ways to stay safe during an earthquake, according to Public Safety Canada and the British Columbia government.

If you are indoors:

The key phrase to remember is “drop, dip, catch,” according to the British Columbia Earthquake Alliance. “Falling” or bending under heavy furniture such as a table, desk, or bed. Face away from any windows. “Cover” your head and torso with your arms to prevent exposure to falling objects. It “grabs” the thing you are under and stays covered. Be prepared to move the body until the shaking process is over.

If you are outdoors:

Stay outside in an open area away from buildings.

After the earthquake:

Count to 60 and wait for things to settle down before getting up. Stay calm and prepare for aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes that sometimes follow a larger one. Stay away from brick walls and chimneys as they may collapse during an aftershock. Do not call 911 to report an earthquake. Call 911 only if serious injuries occur. If you are near a beach or on a beach, move to higher ground immediately. Listen to local authorities and leave if you are ordered to evacuate.
