Peruvian bishops pray for the victims of the earthquake that left at least five dead National Catholic Register

The bishops of Peru offered prayers and expressed their solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that struck on Saturday night in the Junín region – located in the Andean region in the center of the country – killing at least five people, injuring more than two dozen and injuring hundreds.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred around 9:00 p.m., was in the Chungos Bajo area, in the Chupaca department of the Junín region — located about 193 miles east of the capital, Lima — according to the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI, by its Spanish acronym).

“We share the grief of the families grieving for their loved ones, we offer our prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased, and we ask the Lord to give everyone strength, comfort and hope,” the bishops said in the wake of the disaster.

“We express our spiritual closeness to all those affected, to those who have lost their homes, and to those generously participating in rescue, care and relief efforts,” said Bishop Carlos García Camader, President of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference.

After encouraging Peruvians to show solidarity with those affected, the bishops urge them not to lose hope and pray “that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Hope, may intercede for all those affected and accompany our beloved people in Junin.”

Rescue operations involving police, firefighters and the Peruvian army are still continuing, and authorities are assessing the damage – especially in the Pampunya region of the Chungos Bajo region, where nearly 50 homes have been affected.

In an interview with Radio Programas del Perú (RPP, in the Spanish acronym), Hernando Tavera, head of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP, in the Spanish acronym), stated that the extent of the devastation in this area is due to the fragility of the houses, most of which were built using substandard materials.

“When structures are built to proper standards and engineering, they obviously achieve better results than those built using local materials,” Tavera explained, making them vulnerable to collapsing easily.

The IGP has so far recorded 12 aftershocks. The strongest ones reached magnitudes of 3.7 and 3.4.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Luis Enrique Arroyo Sánchez headed to the Chungos Bajo region alongside Defense Minister Amadeo Flores and INDECI President Luis Enrique Vázquez “to supervise the response to the 5.1-magnitude earthquake and coordinate assistance to the affected population,” according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Collapse of the historical cross

As a result of the earthquake, the historic city of Kani Cruz, known as Lord Kani Cruz, collapsed. The cross, erected in 1534 and located in the main square of Chungus Bago, is one of the oldest religious monuments in the region, according to local media reports.

Carved from limestone and featuring bas-reliefs of a crucified Christ and the Virgin Mary, it was declared in 1990 a National Cultural Heritage Site, along with the main church of Chungos Bajo and the El Cubon Church.
