Scientists deploy new sensors on Mount Adams amid unusual seismic activity

MOUNT ADAMS, Wash. (KPTV) – Scientists have begun installing new monitoring equipment around Mount Adams amid a sharp rise in seismic activity beneath the volcano in central Washington.

Mount Adams usually experiences an earthquake every two or three years. But in September 2024 alone, six earthquakes were recorded. This is the largest number in a single month since monitoring began in 1982.

In response to the increased activity, scientists decided to install additional temporary sensors in the Mount Adams area. There is currently only one permanent seismic monitor for Mount Adams.

Mount Adams is one of the lesser-noticed volcanoes in the Cascade Mountain Range.

New monitoring stations record seismic vibrations and ultimately give researchers a better picture of the activity occurring beneath the volcano.

Mount Adams is being closely monitored after a series of earthquakes in September. The scientist in charge of the USGS Volcano Observatory talks about this.

FOX 12 spoke to John Major, the scientist in charge of the USGS Volcano Observatory, about Mount Adams.

“Right now, there is only one observer about six and a half miles from the volcano,” Major said. “With just one monitor, it's very difficult to pinpoint really good locations. It's really difficult to get an accurate depth of earthquakes.”

Mount Adams is considered a “high-risk” volcano, according to the US Geological Survey. However, Major said there was no evidence to suggest an eruption would occur anytime soon.

“Right now, there is no cause for concern. We are maintaining what we call our alert level status at a ‘normal’ level,” Majors said. “There is a good chance this is just background activity of the volcano.”

Mount Adams is located in south-central Washington, about 30 miles north of the White Salmon Hood River area.

The USGS determines a volcano's threat level by several factors, including potential impacts to nearby residents, transportation disruptions, and general impacts to infrastructure if there is a volcanic event.

Historically, volcanic activity at Mount Adams has rarely been explosive. The last eruption was between 3,800 and 7,600 years ago.

Mount Adams holds the distinction of the largest active volcano in size and volume in Washington State.
