Rising seismicity at Washington volcano prompts scientists to further monitor
Scientists deploy monitoring devices at Mount Adams volcano in Washington state, after a rise in seismic activity.
Mount Adams typically experiences an earthquake every two to three years, but in September, there were only six quakes, the most in a single month since monitoring began in 1982, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The earthquakes were monitored by the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) and ranged in magnitude from 0.9 to 2.0. The US Geological Survey said none of the quakes were felt on the surface.
With only one seismic station near the volcano, the USGS said monitoring capabilities are limited.

CVO and PNSN plan to install temporary seismic stations near Mount Adams to help detect small earthquakes while getting better estimates of magnitude, location and depth. The data will help scientists assess the significance of the increased seismic activity near the volcano.
With permission from the U.S. Forest Service, CVO will establish temporary stations south and southwest of Mount Adams. Once activated, the data will be sent to the CVO and PNSN in real time.

Despite the spike in seismic activity, the USGS says there is no indication of cause for concern and that the alert level and color code for Mount Adams remain at green and normal.
Mount Adams is located in south-central Washington, about 50 miles west-southwest of Yakima, Washington.

In the north-south oriented volcanic field of Adams-King Mountain, which includes more than 120 smaller volcanoes, Mount Adams is the most prominent peak. It is also the second tallest volcano in Washington and the largest active volcano in the state by volume and area, according to the US Geological Survey.
Over the past 12,000 years, there have been four lava flows that started on the volcano's apron and two vents along its southern rim, the agency said. Flows typically travel only a few miles from their vents.
7.1 A strong earthquake hits the coast of Japan, and a tsunami warning is issued
On October 3, 2024, the USGS and USFS installed a new temporary seismic station for the Adams South Climbers Route (ASCR) on Mount Adams. (USGS)
The US Geological Survey added that the last time Mount Adams volcano erupted was between 3,800 and 7,600 years ago.
But one of the biggest threats to people living near the volcano are lahars, or muddy flows of rock, ash and ice that rush downstream like fast-flowing concrete.

The summit, covered in ice, is also covered by large amounts of thermally weak rock, which, if weakened by future landslides, could generate lahars.
