IBM, Grillo, and Linux Foundation partners in early earthquake detection systems

The Linux Foundation – in partnership with IBM and Startup Grillo – today announced an initiative called OpenEEW to accelerate the deployment of open source early detection (EEW) earthquake detection systems around the world. The organizations say OpenEEW will integrate sensing, detection, and analysis components from the Grillo EEW platform, along with the Docker release of the detection component that can be deployed to Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift on the IBM Cloud.

An estimated 3 billion people live under the threat of earthquakes globally. According to the US Geological Survey, in California, there is a 94% chance that an earthquake isn’t just a bad omen. However, only a few countries – such as Mexico, Japan, Turkey, Romania, China, Italy, parts of the United States and Taiwan – have EEWs, in part because it can cost in excess of $ 1 billion.

OpenEEW, created with support from USAID, the Clinton Foundation, and Arrow Electronics, includes Internet elements for things like hardware and firmware that can detect and transmit motion. Real-time detection systems can be deployed on platforms from Kubernetes to Raspberry Pi, and the software enables users to receive alerts on devices, wearables, and mobile apps.

IBM, which originally supported Grillo through the Clinton Foundation’s Global Initiative (CGI) network, says it will add OpenEEW technologies to the Linux Foundation-backed Call for Code deployment pipeline. Call for Code, launched in May 2018, aims to combine data technologies, artificial intelligence and blockchain to create systems that allow for a better response to natural disasters. IBM previously said it would spend $ 30 million over five years to rally developers around the software.

Moreover, IBM says it has developed a new dashboard to visualize sensor readings and has deployed six of Grillo’s seismic sensors for testing in Puerto Rico. With OpenEEW, the company hopes to encourage construction of EEW in places like Nepal, New Zealand, Ecuador and other seismic areas. These communities can then help OpenEEW by developing the design of sensors and creating ways to communicate alerts to citizens.

In a step toward realizing this vision, Grillo says researchers from Harvard University and the University of Oregon are analyzing more than 1 terabyte of data collected by sensors since 2017 in Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. With support from the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, Harvard researchers are working with Grillo to deploy a network of sensors throughout Mexico City and assess seismic and seismic behavior beneath the ancient lake basin.

A growing body of research is looking at earthquake detection driven by artificial intelligence. Harvard and Google have created an artificial intelligence model that is able to predict the location of aftershocks up to one year after a major earthquake. And in a paper from the Department of Geophysics at Stanford University, scientists describe an artificial intelligence system – called the Cnn-Rnn Earthquake Detector, or CRED – that can isolate and identify a set of seismic signals from historical and continuous data.

What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
