On this day 35 years ago, the Loma Prieta earthquake shook the Bay Area, killing 63 people.
Thursday marks the 35th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurred on Oct. 17, 1989, in the middle of a World Series that pitted the Bay Area's two baseball teams, the Giants and the A's, against each other.
Like the Subway Series in New York, when the Yankees and Mets played each other, this World Series was called the Bay Bridge Series, and in later years, starting in 1997, the A's and Giants made a point of doing one Bay Bridge Series each season. . (This was effectively the last year, as the first team took off to Sacramento and then to Vegas.)
As many have heard before, the 1989 World Series game at Candlestick Park, which was scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m., was likely the reason there were no more deaths on the roads when the quake struck at 5:04 p.m. – Because many people have heard it before. People had left work early Tuesday to go home or hunker down at the bar to watch the game.
The A's won two home games at the Coliseum, and the two teams crossed the bay for Game 3 on that October night.
The majority of deaths in the Loma Prieta earthquake, 42 out of 63, occurred as a result of the collapse of the Cypress Highway bridge in West Oakland. The two-story concrete structure flipped in on itself, trapping drivers in the basement, and in some cases crushing them.
You can view a slideshow here of the Oakland Tribune's Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs of the tragedy and aftermath of the earthquake.
As one of those drivers described it to KPIX in the video below, “I felt the front of my car shaking, and I thought I had a flat tire so I slowed down. The highway started to give way, and it just fell, and I happened to be between two cross members, and there was just enough room to live “in it.”
If you have the MyShake app, I received a test alert this morning, on our anniversary, at 10:17 a.m. — mine came a minute early, at 10:16 a.m. In the event of a large earthquake (more than 4.0 million), MyShake will be able to send alerts in advance to California residents near the epicenter, in order to seek cover or safety, giving them a 10-20 second window before a large earthquake occurs (more From 4.0 million) vibration starts.
(You may remember that the app, thanks to a tech partner and a configuration glitch, mistakenly sent out a test alert last year at 3:19 a.m., instead of 10:19 a.m., rudely waking up many people.)
The anniversary of the earthquake, like the anniversary of the Great April 1906 earthquake and fire, is another reminder to pack your Go Bag and shelter-in-place supplies together. Everyone should have three days' worth of drinking water stored, non-perishable food stored at home, and a Go Bag ready for medications, pet supplies, and cash in small bills in case you have to flee your home. See more suggestions at Ready.gov.
Now, as is tradition on this anniversary, we're sharing footage of longtime KGO anchor Cheryl Jennings, now retired, at the anchor desk that evening in 1989. Jennings, a nine-time Emmy Award winner, had only spent two years as anchor job at the time, having started at KGO as a reporter in 1979.
Without the help of cell phones or social media, the media was largely flying blind in the first minutes and hours after the quake, with information pouring in about what the damage looked like, some of it just rumours.
KGO begins broadcasting just after 5 p.m., and the earthquake hits at 2:24 in the video below. The broadcast from the stadium cut out – the announcers were in the middle of showing replays from Game 2, so we only get intermittent audio of the announcers saying “We have a home run-“. It then switches to audio only, with the sound of fans roaring and screaming in the stadium, and at the 3:46 mark it switches to longtime local KGO anchor Cheryl Jennings, looking as cool and calm as ever.
At 10:40, the studio is shaking as Jennings weathers one of several aftershocks, still effortlessly cool as she tells people, “Check your gas main, check your water main for any damage.”
