A Cypriot group of 100 travels to Türkiye to attend a court hearing over the earthquake

A group of about 100 Cypriots headed on Monday to the city of Adiyaman in southeastern Turkey before the next session in the trial of the 11 people responsible for the collapse of the Isaias Hotel in the city, which resulted in the deaths of 24 Cypriot children and 11 Cypriot adults. And 37 more last year.

The group, consisting of family members of the dead, politicians, a delegation from the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association and a number of journalists, left Ercan (Tempo) Airport in the north first, heading to Gaziantep on Monday morning, before continuing its journey to Türkiye. Adiyaman is on the ground.

The trial is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, with all 11 defendants currently charged with “causing death by intentional negligence” at the 3rd High Criminal Court in Adıyaman. If convicted, each could face a maximum of 22 and a half years in prison.

However, the families of those killed demanded that the 11 people be charged with intentionally killing all 72 victims.

The rhetoric surrounding this request by the victims' families intensified before the trial resumed, with Rusin Karakaya, whose daughter Selin was among those killed, insisting on such charges in an interview with the TAC news agency.

Karakaya is now president of Keeping the Champion Angels Alive – the “hero angels” nickname given to the Cypriot children who traveled to Adiyaman as representatives of the Famagusta Turk Maariv College volleyball team and who were killed when the hotel collapsed.

“If a decision is not made to upgrade the charges to include the possibility of intent, we will say: justice collapsed, justice lost, justice defeated,” she told Tuck.

Of the 11 defendants, she said, “they have plunged our lives into darkness, but if justice comes with a conviction with intent, we believe we will see some light.”

He added: “Everything is clear in the Isaias case. The hotel collapsed in seconds and became our children's grave. The building's elevator had obviously been tampered with, and such a project was not approved by the authorities. “They forged the licenses.”

Her words were echoed by lawyer Bervin Aksoy Ipekcioglu, whose daughter Seren was also among those killed. She told Yeni Dozen newspaper that in her opinion, premeditated murder charges for all 72 victims would be appropriate for the defendants in the case.

“The type of error we call ‘intent’ is when a person expects the outcome but does not care and does not take necessary precautions. “If the Republic of Turkey wants to make a fair decision in this case, it should definitely convict those accused of premeditated murder,” he added.

She also expressed doubt that the fourth report on the hotel collapse, which the court in Adiyaman in April ordered to be conducted by Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, would be ready in time on Tuesday.

“The reason the court postponed the hearing to October 22 was so that the report would be ready by then, but we have not received it yet. It seems likely that it will not be ready in time.”

It was found that permits granted to the Isaias Hotel did not comply with relevant laws, and that the information written on the permits did not match the work carried out at the hotel.

The fourth report was commissioned after Ankara's Gazi University prepared a controversial report on the hotel's construction. The report was much less harsh than the first two reports, written by Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon and Istanbul Technical University.

The first two explained how sand and gravel from a local river were used in building the hotel, and how the hotel's supporting columns were cut, among many other deficiencies, but the Gazi University report stated that the reported illegal flooring and illegal elevator shaft did not affect the hotel's collapse. .
