UK Maritime Authority raises Strait of Hormuz threat level after report of attack on oil tanker

The UKMTO maritime agency raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to ‘significant’ on Saturday following an attack on a commercial vessel in the waterway.

The agency said Saturday morning that the “Master of Tanker” ship reported being hit by an “unidentified projectile” in the strait.

The ship suffered damage to its bridge, but crew members reported it was safe, he said.

He added, “At present, no environmental damage has been reported.”

UKMTO has warned sailors of the presence of undersea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping chokepoints, and said they should expect to encounter a naval presence as mine clearance operations continue.

The Strait of Hormuz has been the center of tensions between the US and Tehran and is an important part of the recently agreed ‘memorandum of understanding’.

“This reckless violation of the ceasefire will, as always, lead to retreat and regret on their part,” he wrote in a social media post.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Saturday that in response to “American aggression,” its forces attacked U.S. military positions in the region, according to Iranian state media. Bahrain later announced that it had been targeted by “multiple” Iranian drones, accusing Tehran of “undermining peace efforts” in the region.

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “We condemn in the strongest terms the attack targeting its territory early this morning,” adding that the attack was a “blatant threat to the safety of its citizens and residents.”
