UNAIR Nursing Program raises awareness about preparing for large earthquakes

UNAIR NEWS – The possibility of a strong earthquake remains a major concern for Indonesians, especially given the country's location in an earthquake-prone area. In response, students from the University of Airlangga (UNAIR) B26 Transportation Program and the Medical-Surgical Nurse Specialist Program organized an earthquake preparedness seminar on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at SMKN 5 Surabaya.

The event, titled The Future of Education: Innovation and Preparedness in Relation to Trends in Mega-Earthquakes Issues in Project-Based Learning for Adolescent Development, included a presentation by Johan Saptadi of the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), who covered earthquake preparedness and ways to overcome them. Saptadi stressed that the program was not limited to lectures, but also included earthquake simulations in which the students participated. He explained, “The simulation operations focused on rapid and accurate evacuation operations, triage procedures, and first aid for disaster victims.”

During the debriefing session, Saptadi provided detailed instructions on carrying out quick and effective evacuations based on real-time conditions. “The simulation helps students understand the steps that need to be taken during an earthquake, and although the situations on the ground may differ, the evacuation procedures remain the same,” he said.

Marta Afrivantino Soria, a nursing student and main organizer of the event, explained that the initiative aims to strengthen students' preparedness for a possible strong earthquake, which could happen at any time. “We chose this topic based on the earthquake that struck the city of Surabaya last March, which damaged several hospitals. This is why earthquake preparedness is so important, especially for students and the wider community,” Soria explained.

She added that the event also included pre- and post-tests to evaluate the students’ knowledge before and after the disaster preparedness training. After the simulations, the organizers and students conducted a comprehensive evaluation, under the guidance of BASARNAS staff and UNAIR nursing faculty. “The evaluation aims to identify shortcomings during the simulation and provide feedback for more effective actions in the future,” she noted.

In conclusion, she hopes that the awareness program will significantly enhance earthquake preparedness among students and the general public. “Our goal is for this experience to enhance greater preparedness and rapid and effective responses during a disaster,” she concluded.
