Authorities said two earthquakes struck Peru, killing at least five people and injuring 21 others in a mountainous area east of the capital, Lima.

The Peruvian National Seismological Center said that two earthquakes measuring 5.1 and 3.7 struck the Junin region on Saturday evening. Pictures posted on social media appear to show collapsed homes and rescue workers removing rubble.

Rescue workers continue to search for people who may still be trapped under the rubble.

“I deeply regret the consequences of the earthquake in Junin,” President-elect Keiko Fujimori said in a social media post on Sunday. He added: “I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died and my solidarity with those affected.”

Luis Vasquez, head of Peru’s National Civil Defense Institute, told Radio Peru that initial reports indicate that at least 48 homes were destroyed and 18 others were damaged, displacing about 300 people who were provided with tents.

Five people have been confirmed dead due to the earthquakes, Xitoza radio station reported, citing authorities. Reuters news agency put the total number at six, citing the country’s civil defense chief.

Houses in the town of Chupaca, about 300 kilometers east of Lima, are usually built of mud brick and are prone to collapsing.

An unnamed resident of Chungus Bago told NTV: “The earthquake destroyed our house. There are many mud-brick houses here that collapsed.”

Peru is located in the volcanic region known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” which accounts for about 85 percent of the world’s seismic activity.

The National Seismological Center in Peru said that the first earthquake occurred at a depth of 24 km and the second at a depth of 18 km. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center previously estimated that the magnitude of the first earthquake reached 5.6.
