Death Valley earthquakes were felt in Las Vegas

Three moderate earthquakes were recorded in Death Valley National Park overnight, according to earthquake experts, and some social media users reported feeling shaking in Las Vegas.

The first was a magnitude 4.2 quake just before midnight, with a magnitude 4.7 quake occurring at about 1 a.m. and a magnitude 4.3 quake occurring at about 8 a.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Comments on the Las Vegas Breaking News and Traffic Accidents Facebook group, as well as posts on X, indicated that some Las Vegas Valley residents felt the ground shaking.

“Yes, Summerlin is south by Mesa Park. “I thought I was dreaming or the dog shook the bed but I checked my app and it confirmed it was an earthquake,” Amy Miroshnik posted on the Facebook group.

The quakes came on the heels of elevated small seismic activity near Stovepipe Wells over the past two weeks, the university said in a news release. Stovepipe Wells is located about 150 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

More than 55 earthquakes have been recorded near Stovepipe Wells starting with a 2.9 earthquake on October 9.

The earthquakes are detected and reported in real time by the statewide Nevada Seismological Laboratory seismic network headquartered at the University of Nevada, Reno, and the Southern California Seismic Network headquartered at the California Institute of Technology. No harm expected.
