Kagan Primary School rebuilt 19 years after the earthquake – newspaper

Mansehra: A government primary school in Sohni district of Kaghan Valley has been rebuilt almost 19 years after it was destroyed by the earthquake.

During the opening ceremony on Friday, District Education Officer Sarfaraz Ahmed said the school building is earthquake-resistant and can meet the heating and other needs of students during extreme weather conditions.

“This is one of hundreds of schools and colleges hit by the earthquake in the province, but government funding has led to their rebuilding,” he told the participants, who included parents, teachers and education officials.

The Disaster Management Administration said that the Post-Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority left work on many educational institutions incomplete.

The official says the building is resistant to earthquakes and harsh weather

Balakot District Education Officer Ghulam Gilani said that the district government was allocating funds for the reconstruction of schools whose work had not been completed by IRA due to lack of funds.

One resident, Hussein Din, said the destruction of the school due to the 2005 earthquake severely affected the education of children in the area.

“Our children have been attending classes in a small, muddy house for nearly two decades, but now that the school has been rebuilt, their suffering has ended,” he said.

He said schoolchildren can attend classes comfortably even during harsh winters, as the newly built classrooms can withstand the extreme cold due to the installation of a modern heating system.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati on Friday praised journalists for fighting injustice in society.

“I express my gratitude to journalists who are fulfilling their professional responsibilities by highlighting societal issues,” Mr. Swati said at a function organized by Mansehra Press Club here to distribute Umrah tickets and laptops to its members.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Media Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif and MPA Shaukat Yousafzai were also present at the event.

“We have provided grants to Mansehra and other journalism clubs to sponsor journalists and build their capacity,” he said.

The Prime Minister's Assistant said that the government is taking measures to provide journalists in the governorate with housing and vocational training.

Mansehra Press Club President Shehzad Jahangiri and former Television Journalists Association President Nisar Khan Swati thanked the association president for approving a grant of Rs 5 million to Mansehra journalists.
