Republicans have regained control of the US Senate after flipping seats in West Virginia, Ohio and Montana. The results guarantee Republicans at least 52 of the 100 seats in the new chamber, with a handful of races still undecided. Jim Justice, the current governor of West Virginia, won the seat vacated by former Democrat Joe Manchin, while Ohio's Bernie Moreno unseated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown. In Montana, veteran Democrat Jon Tester lost to Republican Tim Sheehy. If the Republican Party controls the House, Senate, and White House, it would have broad power to pass laws and implement the president's partisan agenda. Republicans last won a majority in the Senate in 2018. The Senate result immediately sparked debate over who would replace Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as Senate Republican leader, and thus become majority leader in the next legislative session.
