Starmer is expected to announce his departure on Monday as a growing number of MPs back Burnham for PM – UK Politics Live | politics

Starmer is expected to announce his resignation as prime minister on Monday Peter Walker

Peter Walker, the Guardian’s senior political correspondent, provided more detail about the Prime Minister’s future intentions.

Keir Starmer is expected to announce he will resign as prime minister on Monday after coming under overwhelming pressure from Labor MPs to allow Andy Burnham to become Labor leader.

The Prime Minister and his allies have insisted for weeks that he would fight a leadership challenge from Burnham or anyone else ahead of the Makerfield by-election, where he hopes to secure a return to Westminster.

But on Sunday morning, business secretary Peter Kyle told Sky News that Starmer was spending the weekend “making time to reflect on the political realities” he faces.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Kyle refused to say what he thought Starmer’s plan was or what he had asked the PM to do. You can read the full story here.

Under Labor Party rules, any member seeking to become leader must have the support of at least 20% of the party in parliament, or 81 members.

Former health secretary Wes Streeting has pledged to take on the top job and has said he has sufficient backers. But allies of Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham are skeptical.

His candidacy will be less likely if supporters of a wavering Labor party conclude that they prefer to back the likely winner and follow in Burnham’s footsteps.

Starmer’s resignation will mean Britain will elect its seventh prime minister in a decade. This comes just two years after he led the Labor Party to a majority of 174 seats in the general election.

His premiership has been hit by controversies and twists, including his decision to pay winter fuel bills for the elderly and appoint Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington.

Labor has performed poorly in the opinion polls, and Starmer himself is largely unpopular with the public. Reform UK has led in more than 300 consecutive national polls, and many Labor MPs are increasingly convinced that Nigel Farage will win the next election if the leader is not changed.

Former Conservative chancellor Rishi Sunak offered some advice to Andy Burnham in an article for the Sunday Times. For reference, in July 2024 Sunak lost to Keir Starmer in the Conservatives’ worst general election defeat in parliamentary history. Sunak, still MP for Richmond and Northallerton, wrote:

Quote Burnham must realize that even if he gets to number 10, he will never have more power than he had on his first day on the job. It’s important to have a clear, achievable plan for what you want to do during your business hours.

Those around Burnham will want to get him there by forcing Starmer out, perhaps by resigning as a minister. But Burnham shouldn’t want to be PM by default.

The morning after Boris Johnson dropped out in October 2022, I remember continuing to suggest to our team that they should want a contest and that it would be good for us.

They thought I was just emotionally preparing for another candidate to get the nomination they needed and run a leadership election. But I actually meant it. Without one, your mission is weakened and you end up tied up in commitments that aren’t your priorities.

Some commentators have said Andy Burnham is simply a better communicator than Keir Starmer, but have questioned how different he is on policy.

The Guardian’s policy editor, Kiran Stacey, takes a useful look at the political project the Burnham government will pursue in this useful account.

As Keir Starmer spent Sunday at Checkers as he considers the chancellorship, he took time to post about Father’s Day on social media. He wrote to X:

QuoteBeing a dad is my greatest joy. Today I am thinking about my father and who I am to my children because of him. Happy Father’s Day.

Shadow chancellor Mel Stride has said nothing fundamentally will change if Andy Burnham replaces Keir Starmer as prime minister because Labor is “addicted” to debt and borrowing. This will continue under new leadership.

Regarding Burnham specifically, Stride told Sky News: “This is someone who has flip-flopped all over the place. You’ve seen that in this by-election as well.”

“He clearly doesn’t understand what the fiscal rules are. He’s said some pretty stupid things about the bond market in the past. The market is watching,” Stride said, referring to Bunrham’s previous suggestion that the state should be less sensitive to the reactions of bond traders. The outgoing mayor of Greater Manchester has since strengthened his team of economic advisers in an apparent attempt to boost his financial credibility.

Stride went on to say that it would be “bad and wrong-headed” for Burnham to take over as prime minister. The Conservatives want Starmer to remain leader because his popularity nationally is very low, as evidenced by Labor’s disastrous election results across England, Scotland and Wales last May.

Peter Kyle spoke to Laura Kuenssberg on the Sunday Politics program. The business secretary repeated very similar remarks to Sky News this morning, specifically saying Keir Starmer would spend this weekend thinking deeply about the “political reality” he faces “today” (compared to the past two weeks). He said Starmer would consider what was in the best interests of the country.

Peter Kyle said Labor should not descend into infighting like the Conservatives did whenever it faced a “moment of political challenge”. The Conservatives were easily defeated in the 2024 election by Starmer after changing five prime ministers in seven years, including three in 2022.

Asked whether he thought it was in the country’s interest for Keir Starmer to leave, Peter Kyle dodged the question and said it was essential the government continued to function despite political turbulence. He told Sky News:

Quotes Putting the country first I believe my role is to remain 100% focused on delivering and supporting the authority of this government to govern through moments of political challenge.

The cabinet minister said Starmer was reflecting on the ‘political realities and challenges’ he currently faces.

Peter Kyle, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, told Sky News he had not spoken to Starmer on the phone since Friday, but said he had had a “very detailed conversation” with him at the time, which was “private” and “personal”.

“The Prime Minister was calm. He was thoughtful. He dominated the conversation,” Kyle told Trevor Phillips.

“The prime minister asked me many times about the country. In long conversations, he never once asked me about private interests. It was always about the country. And I think that was the tone of my conversation with him.”

“I think I’ve said this honestly. I think that’s the mindset of the Prime Minister heading into this weekend. Through this, I’m trying to find time to reflect on the current political challenges while working hard as Prime Minister as always.”

Kyle went on to say that Starmer was “making time to reflect on the political realities, challenges and opportunities he finds himself in”. Over the weekend, the Prime Minister stayed at his country home, Checkers, where he spent time with his wife Victoria and children.

Starmer is reportedly expected to resign on Monday as a growing number of lawmakers back Andy Burnham as prime minister.

good morning. Welcome to British Politics Live. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to resign on Monday and is preparing to work out a timetable for an orderly start from No. 10, according to the Observer.

The newspaper reports that Starmer, who had insisted he would fight any leadership challenge, now recognizes his position is untenable after speaking to cabinet ministers, party donors and trade union leaders over the past few days.

“He has worked hard to confront the reality that there is no support,” one source told the Observer. “The truth is we all know this is no longer a sustainable proposition. Of course there is sadness about it all, but sometimes there is an inevitability to politics and, as Boris Johnson said, ‘the herd moves when it moves’.”

Number 10 denied reports that Starmer would soon resign and said he would continue as prime minister.

The number of MPs backing Andy Burnham for the Labor leadership has surged following his by-election victory in Mankerfield last week, which showed he can fight reform in a general election.

The mayor of Greater Manchester is expected to arrive in Westminster on Monday and take his place in the House of Commons. He is said to then be planning to speak to Starmer and present him with a list of up to 200 backers to pressure him to resign and begin a transition.

Burnham’s allies favor a longer wait to allow him to prepare a government, which could mean Starmer could remain prime minister for several months.

The number of Labor MPs publicly calling for Starmer to step down has surpassed 100. This is just under a quarter of the party’s lawmakers. That includes many who want a transition of power without a potentially chaotic leadership contest.

Starmer is under pressure to reveal his plans ahead of a crisis cabinet meeting on Tuesday, where a number of ministers are expected to tell him his time is up.
