A 6.8-magnitude earthquake shakes Cuba after hurricanes and power outages

HAVANA — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 shook eastern Cuba on Sunday, after weeks of hurricanes and power outages that left many on the island reeling.

The epicenter of the quake was about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Bartolome Masso, Cuba, according to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The roar was felt throughout the eastern part of Cuba, including major cities such as Santiago de Cuba, as well as Holguín. Guantanamo. Local media in Jamaica also reported that the tremors were felt on the island.

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries in Cuba.

Residents of Santiago, Cuba's second largest city, were shocked on Sunday. Yolanda Tapio, 76, said people in the city had poured into the streets and were still sitting nervously at the entrances to their homes. She said she felt at least two aftershocks following the quake, but had not heard from friends and family about any damage.

“You had to see how everything was moving, the walls, everything,” she told the Associated Press.

Others reported hearing screams, adding that the earthquake was strong and prolonged. On social media, residents of the small town of Belon reported minor damage, posting photos of crumbling roofs and cracks on the walls of buildings, which is unusual in Cuba where many buildings are old and in need of repair.

The earthquake comes during another difficult period for Cuba.

On Wednesday, Category 3 Hurricane Rafael tore through western Cuba, with strong winds causing power outages across the island, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate. Days later, much of the island was still experiencing power outages.

Weeks before October, the island was also hit hard. First, the island experienced an island-wide power outage for several days, as a result of the island's energy crisis. Shortly after, it was hit by a powerful hurricane that struck the eastern part of the island, killing at least six people.

Power outages and widespread discontent among many struggling to get by sparked small protests across the island.
