A 5.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Lahore, Gujarat and other cities of Punjab

LAHORE: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Lahore, Gujarat and several other cities across Punjab on Thursday, prompting residents to rush out of their homes and buildings in panic.

Tremors were felt in areas including Jhelum, Kamalia and Khanewal, as well as Chichawatni, Palwal, Chiniot and Hafizabad.

The epicenter of the earthquake was measured at a depth of 15 kilometers near Kharyan.

According to the preliminary report issued by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), there was no loss of life or property due to the earthquake, with the department actively inspecting buildings, PDMA Director General said.

Last month, an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, sparking panic among residents.

The epicenter of the earthquake, according to the National Seismological Center, was the border area between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, at a depth of 212 kilometers.

This is the second earthquake in a month in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as a 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook several areas of the province two weeks earlier.

Earthquakes are common in Pakistan, as the country lies on the border of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Large parts of South Asia are seismically active because the tectonic plate known as the Indian plate is pushing northward toward the Eurasian plate.
