Northern California earthquake: How strong was it felt?

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Humboldt County triggered a short-lived tsunami warning from Oregon all the way to Santa Cruz.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. – A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Humboldt County Thursday morning, prompting a short-term tsunami warning extending from Oregon to the vicinity of Santa Cruz.

The USGS said the quake occurred around 10:45 a.m. and was detected 62 miles southwest of Ferndale, about five hours northwest of Sacramento.

People reported feeling the quake as far south as Monterey on the Central Coast and as far north as Medford near the Oregon-California state line, according to the US Geological Survey's “Did You Feel It?” Self-reporting tool.

The US Geological Survey said Eureka and surrounding areas may have sustained moderate to severe damage from the quake.

The quake was reportedly felt in the Central Valley in Merced, Modesto and Stockton, but its intensity was “weak,” according to the USGS. Severity was also “weak” for reports in Sacramento, Elk Grove and other areas in the Sacramento region.

A man named Steven told ABC10 he was working on the sixth floor of the California Natural Resources Building when the quake struck.

“It wasn't as intense as if you were at ground level in a normal house, you could really hear things shaking and feel things shaking, but we didn't have that in our building,” he said. “Some people probably felt it more than others and felt the need to evacuate as well, so not everyone really felt safe.”

He also said he saw construction workers stop working and put safety first before resuming construction.
