A series of strong earthquakes strike near Adak Island in Alaska

A series of powerful earthquakes – the strongest measuring 6.3 – struck the North Pacific Ocean near Alaska's Adak Island, seismologists said. No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The first quake occurred at 9:57 a.m. local time Sunday when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Adak Island, part of the Andrianof Islands group of the Aleutian Islands.

Adak Island, with a population of about 300, is located about 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage.

After several aftershocks, a second earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the same area at 3:15 pm local time. This was followed by another series of aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.1 at 3:38 p.m., according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

“Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat due to this earthquake,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in one of several statements.

The Alaska Earthquake Center said some people reported feeling slight tremors from Sunday's swarm of quakes. There were no immediate reports of damage. Aftershocks – especially magnitude 5 or less – are likely to continue for several days and weeks to come.

“Swarms of moderate-magnitude earthquakes are common in the Aleutian region and do not necessarily portend anything more significant,” Michael West, director of the Alaska Earthquake Center, said in a statement. However, he added, “Because this area has been at or on the edge of several large historical earthquakes, we are monitoring it closely.”

The sparsely populated region of Alaska, which is located on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, is occasionally exposed to strong earthquakes. Most notably, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck north of Prince William Sound in March 1964, triggering a tsunami that killed at least 143 people.
