Central California shakes with 5.5 Nevada earthquake

SACRAMENTO — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area of ​​Nevada Monday afternoon, shaking downtown throughout central California, including the Sacramento area.

In Sacramento, someone saw ornaments on a Christmas tree sway, as did some curtains, for less than a minute. Another person said water flowed into the swimming pool. At Davis, a computer swayed for just a few seconds and an office chair shook, while a young man reported feeling his bed sway and a nervous poodle looking for comfort.

In Reno, about 50 miles northwest of the quake's epicenter, someone at KTVN-TV captured video of the star on a newsroom Christmas tree still shivering — just barely — as staffers scrambled to cover the quake. One person was heard saying that he did not feel anything.

“Very strong” shaking, as defined by the Modified Mercalli intensity scale, was felt in the desert where the epicenter was located, but shaking was “mild” in Carson City, about 40 miles away. The shaking was “weak” in Sacramento, which is located about 140 miles southwest of the epicenter.

People reported feeling the quake as far away as the San Francisco Bay Area and Fresno, about 200 and 170 miles away, respectively.

Nevada is at risk from earthquakes. Seismologists have noted that there are at least 30 faults that could cause damage in the Reno-Carson City corridor, according to the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.

If a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred on the Genoa Fault around that area, the number of deaths could range from 30 to 120. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake on the Mount Rose Fault in that area could kill between 120 and 500 people.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake on the Frenchman Mountain Fault could kill 80 to 300 people in Clark County, home to Las Vegas, according to state estimates.
