According to officials, the explosion was so huge that a magnitude of 3.0 was recorded on seismic sensors.

Tartous is one of the two Russian military bases in Syria, and was previously used as a naval base and ammunition depot.

The huge explosion, along with secondary explosions, indicates the presence of a large amount of weapons stored in the area.

The signal travels “almost twice as fast” as a normal earthquake, he said.

In 1971, the Soviet Union was the first to establish a naval military base in Tartus.

The facility was classified as a “material and technical support point” until 2017 and not as a base, and it is Russia’s only entry point to the Mediterranean.

The center was used to carry out arms supply and delivery operations after Russia's participation in the Syrian civil war in 2015.

A Kremlin spokesman said on Wednesday (December 11) that Moscow is in contact with the new authorities in Syria and is discussing the future of its bases.
