Condolences pour in for a single mother killed in the Vanuatu earthquake, while others are desperate to contact their loved ones.

Hundreds of Australians stranded in Vanuatu after devastating earthquakes will be repatriated on RAAF flights early this evening.

Brisbane Airport's international terminal will welcome both arrivals.

This follows other emergency rescue flights that transported 148 Australians from the disaster area overnight.

The powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed at least 14 people in the Pacific nation, and aftershocks caused further concern.

With fears the death toll could rise, seasonal workers in Queensland were desperate to hear from their loved ones in Port Vila.

Among those tragically affected by the disaster was Valerie Calcoa, a single mother who had returned home just two days earlier after a second season with labor recruitment company I Comply in the Burdekin area.

Chief Executive Rodney Prestia paid tribute to Ms Calcoa, who leaves behind a three-year-old son.

He said she was part of his work family and was an “amazing, beautiful soul.”

“In the run-up to Vanuatu's Independence Day, she would have the team rehearse their dances for the performance – she just loved to dance and she led the way, teaching all the boys who had two left feet.

“We called her the I Comply dance coach, but it wouldn't be the same without her presence.”

Mr. Prestia discovered that she had died after finally contacting Ms. Calcoa's parents.

She was shopping when the 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck.

“We have chat groups in our areas, and everyone is very sad, it is an absolute tragedy,” he said.

“She was a woman of faith, and she came here for the sole purpose of supporting her son financially, and now he has lost his mother.

“That's what makes it so hard, when the guy upstairs takes the good ones early.”

Prize money to be donated

With commercial repatriation flights to Vanuatu cancelled, I Comply has had to move workers to company accommodation in Toowoomba.

Vanuatu's local cricket team, called 'Vanthorpe', were to lose the grand final on Saturday at Stanthorpe's CF White Oval.

Instead, the undefeated team said it would hold a minute's silence for Ms. Calcoa before the game.

They are hoping for victory so they can donate the $3,000 prize money to help support her son, who is being cared for by his grandparents in Port Vila.

Prestia said another worker's 13-year-old brother died in the quake, a tragic loss he only heard about last night.

“It was a double blow for our company yesterday, it was tough,” Prestia said.

Thousands of Pacific Islanders come to Queensland each year through the Australian Pacific Labor Mobility (PALM) programme, which allows Australian farmers to employ workers from nine neighboring islands.

It helps bridge employment gaps in the agriculture sector across regional and rural areas.

Banana farm worker Jones Malkonsum said he had been on an “emotional rollercoaster” and was praying that his loved ones back home were still alive.

He is one of about 160 Ni-Van seasonal workers from Vanuatu, based at Mareeba in Far North Queensland.

“Most of us during lunchtime were talking on the phone with our families back home,” Malkonsom said.

“All of a sudden, this tragic accident happened, and that's when all the networks and everything went down.

“Later, maybe just a minute later, we were still on our lunch break, and we started seeing people on social media saying ‘Oh, there’s an earthquake here.’”

Malkonsum said many tried to contact their families.

“We couldn't make any calls,” he said.

“Some of us weren't getting good sleep, and we were thinking about our children back home, our families, our parents.”

Rest after reaching beds

Mr Malkonsum was stunned when he was finally able to speak to his daughters, 14-year-old Joselina and eight-year-old Amanda, who are still in Vanuatu.

“We don't care about the damage to our homes, we just pray that our families are okay – that's our priority,” he said.

Malkonsom said that a committee has been formed to increase support for citizens back home.

Meanwhile, workers are supporting each other – especially those who lost loved ones in the disaster.

“We've reached out to our bosses, the people who work with us, and they're very kind, helpful — they just tell us, whatever we need, they can help,” he said.

“Our families back home are definitely not going to have a good Christmas, so we better keep in good touch with them and encourage each other during this disaster.”

The search continues

A desperate search continues for survivors in Vanuatu, where major landslides have occurred and the main airport has been damaged.

It may be years before the island community, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, can return to normal.

Australia sent urgent aid, in addition to teams of firefighters, paramedics, volunteer engineers, dog breeders and doctors.

Australian citizens and permanent residents of Vanuatu have been urged to register on DFAT's online registration portal to receive information and updates.
