Kutch earthquake today: 3.7 magnitude hits Gujarat

Earthquake in Gujarat today: A 3.7-magnitude earthquake shook Gujarat's Kutch district on Monday morning, the Institute of Seismic Research (ISR) said.

The district administration said that there were no reports of injuries or property damage.

The tremor was recorded at 10.44 am, and its epicenter was 76 kilometers northeast of Lakhpat, the Gandhinagar-based institute said.

This is the second seismic activity with a magnitude of more than 3 this month in the region.

On December 7, a 3.2 magnitude tremor was recorded in the area, according to the ISR.

Last month, the city of Kutch recorded a 4-magnitude earthquake on November 18.

Earlier, on November 15, Patan in northern Gujarat was hit by a 4.2-magnitude earthquake, according to ISR data.

Gujarat is a high earthquake risk area.

It has been hit by nine major earthquakes in the past 200 years, according to data from the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA).

The earthquake that struck Kutch on January 26, 2001, was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India in the past two centuries, according to the GSDMA.

A large number of towns and villages in the region were almost completely destroyed in the earthquake that killed nearly 13,800 people and injured 1.67 lakh others.
