Seismologists say another earthquake struck parts of New York State over the weekend. While the magnitude of the earthquake was considered minor, some may wonder if this part of the United States could experience a major earthquake?

The latest earthquake comes on the heels of another small earthquake that struck New York earlier in December. None of the quakes were related to the 4.8-magnitude earthquake in April that shook millions across the Northeast. The spring quake showed such “strange behavior” that experts from the Columbia Climate School say it led to the discovery of a fault line that had “never been identified before.”

An earthquake occurred near Lovell, New York, late Saturday, the US Geological Survey said. The earthquake tracking website says the magnitude of the tremor was 1.7, and was felt at a depth of about 3 miles. No damage was reported.

Scientists have recently discovered that the fault system that runs across New York and parts of the Northeast is more complex and extensive than originally thought.

Some studies have suggested the possibility of additional fault zones extending from the Ramapo Fault into southwestern Connecticut. There are also many small faults criss-crossing throughout New York City, which means there could be a chance of a major earthquake one day.

There is also the Western Quebec Seismic Zone, which can produce larger earthquakes that can be felt up and down the East Coast of the United States, especially relative to its neighbors to the south in the Empire State. This is where the strongest earthquakes occur near us.
