Update status

• Following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu, 30 kilometers west of the capital, Port Vila, on 17 December 2024, 14 deaths were reported. Repeated aftershocks occurred the following week, but no additional damage was reported.

• As of 24 December, 2,435 individuals remain temporarily displaced across a small number of evacuation centers and host families. Food relief items continue to be distributed to both host families and evacuation sites.

• Bauerfield International Airport, which suffered some damage to its terminal, is now fully operational. Some roads remain closed in Efate, including access to the main commercial seaport.

• The Central Business District, which is of great importance to Vanuatu's tourism industry, remains closed, with only emergency teams allowed into it, resulting in loss of income for affected residents.

• The state of emergency was lifted on 24 December. In accordance with the Disaster Recovery and Resilience Act, the recovery phase has officially begun, with coordination now led by the National Recovery Committee (NRC) of the Prime Minister's Office. However, activities initiated or planned under the SOE will continue to be managed by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

• The WFP-led Emergency Communications Cluster has deployed emergency communications services and satellite communications equipment to support key government agencies and humanitarian actors. The equipment is now operational, providing much-needed connectivity to national responders.

• The Logistics Cluster supported the National Disaster Management Office in facilitating requests for assistance, clearance and delivery of relief materials. A Mobile Storage Unit (MSU) has been assembled at the NDMO complex to serve as temporary office/clearing space while the main office building remains unsafe due to earthquake-related damage.
