New Year's quake “felt like a car crashed into the house,” says one Twingate resident.

The new year started with a bang, but not the kind Newfoundland and Labrador is used to. A 2.8-magnitude earthquake shook Notre Dame Bay on Wednesday, confusing nearby residents.

Danny Bath of Twillingate was in his basement office shortly after 2:00 p.m. when he felt what he called a “huge explosion.”

“[My] “The first thought was, 'Well, did the furnace explode?' “'' Bath told CBC Radio Newfoundland Morning.

Bath said the quake felt like a car had crashed into his house. Searching for the source of the tremor, he put on his shoes and went outside.

That's when Bath discovered that he wasn't the only one who felt that way.

He said all his neighbors were outside, and they were coming up with different scenarios about what the commotion was about. In the end, Bath said, they all agreed that “there was nothing else it could have been.”

Natural Resources Canada confirmed the quake was too small to cause any damage, but Bath is still shocked by the impact he felt.

“I've never been involved in an earthquake, so I don't really know how to react,” Bath said.

How did that happen?

Alison Bent, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, told CBC Radio that the sound and impact felt by residents could be attributed to the reaction of the building someone was in or near at the time.

“One type of seismic wave is similar to sound waves,” Bent said. “So there may be some energy transfer into the atmosphere, but it's more likely to be the building itself.”

She added that old faults under the surface of Notre Dame Bay may have reactivated and slid together, causing the earthquake.

Wednesday's quake was too small to tear up the Earth's surface, so Bent said it's difficult to link it to a specific fault. Activity was recorded at seismic stations in St. John's, Deer Lake, eastern Quebec and elsewhere in Atlantic Canada.

Earthquakes are rare in Atlantic Canada, and Bent says there's nothing to worry about.

“It's rare,” Bent said. “It's enough to create excitement for a day or two, and then that's usually the end of it.”
