A 2.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Henrico

A 2.8-magnitude earthquake shook much of Henrico's West End and beyond at 5:28 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter of the quake was at the end of a cul-de-sac on Greenwick Drive in Windham, just north of the Dominion Club and near the Chickahominy River, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency initially reported that the epicenter of the quake was about 7 kilometers north of Windham, east of the Federal Club in Hanover County.

People throughout Glen Allen and as far away as Lakeside and Richmond reported feeling their homes shake after a loud bang. Throughout the neighborhoods, people came out of their homes to see what had happened.

On social media, some area residents said they were wondering if something had exploded or fallen on their homes. Others who experienced the earthquakes said they knew immediately what caused the accident.

It was the 32nd reported earthquake of magnitude 2.5 or greater in the Richmond area since January 1, 2000, and the 13th most powerful earthquake during that period. Most of them were concentrated along the South Anna River south of Louisa.

Three other earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater struck the area near Tuesday during that period:

• A 2.5 magnitude earthquake just north of Rockville Airport on September 23, 2019;

• A 2.5 magnitude earthquake north of Glen Allen along the Chicumini River on April 29, 2000.

• A 2.6 magnitude earthquake north of Windham, near the Federal Club in Hanover County on November 6, 2003.

The strongest earthquake in the region since 2000 was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred 11 km southwest of Mineral.
