Schools were closed in Lesvos after the earthquake occurred overnight

Authorities on the eastern Greek island of Lesvos ordered schools on part of the island to close on Wednesday so they could be inspected for possible structural damage after an overnight earthquake shook the island.

The Athens Geodynamic Center said that the earthquake, which had an initial magnitude of 5.1, occurred after 10:30 pm on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) east-northeast of Methymna on the island of Lesvos, between the island and the nearby Turkish coast.

The earthquake did not cause any injuries or serious damage, but local authorities reported several small rockslides on local roads.

Greece is located in a very seismically active area, but the vast majority of earthquakes cause no injuries or little to no damage. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Lesvos in June 2017, killing one person and injuring 10 others. In 2020, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake near the Greek island of Samos killed dozens of people in nearby Izmir, Turkey, and two on Samos. [AP]
