The US Geological Survey confirms a 2.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Bergen County

The US Geological Survey confirmed that an earthquake occurred in New Jersey on Friday afternoon.

The 2.4-magnitude quake was centered near Paramus, according to the USGS, and struck around 1 p.m. This comes more than nine months after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Tewksbury and its surrounding areas.

News 12 spoke to some Paramos residents about how they felt after the earthquake.

“Just a roar like a tractor trailer coming down the street, and then I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, did something fall in the house? Did a giant sheet of ice just fly off the roof?' “But it was enough to make you very noticeable and think something was wrong,” one resident said.

Another resident said: “They were doing construction work next to me during the summer, and when they brought down the two houses, the house shook in the same way. But there was nothing around it falling.”

News 12 also spoke to a geologist about the situation.

“The Earth is doing what it wants to do. We can't stop continental drift, the movement of these giant plates. The Atlantic is getting wider, and the Pacific is narrowing, almost as fast as your fingernails or toenails. It's getting better,” said geotechnical engineer Bill Kroth.

The Bergen County Office of Emergency Management told News 12 there were no reports of major damage or injuries.

Officials say aftershocks can occur, but it's important to note that they are usually smaller and weaker than the original earthquake.
