SINGAPORE: The remains of a Singaporean killed in the earthquake that struck Taiwan's Halmin District in April last year have been found.

Taiwanese media reported on Sunday (January 26) that a 59-year-old man surnamed Wang found what appeared to be a human on a river bed below a landslide zone along the Shakadang Trail on January 11.

Mr Sim Hwee Kok and his partner Ms Neo Siew Choo were caught on CCTV on a bus near Chakadang at around 7.20am on April 3, 2024 – about 40 minutes before the 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck.

Mr. Wang notified police, who conducted further searches in the area but found no additional remains, according to multiple Taiwanese media reports.

Forensic experts examined the remains and identified them as a human hip bone.

The remains were then transported to the Hualien District Court for further investigation, and on January 24, DNA analysis confirmed that the remains belonged to Mr. SIM.

His identity was confirmed by matching DNA from the remains to a sample provided by his son, who traveled to Taiwan after the earthquake to search for his father, according to local media.

A Singaporean couple were the only people missing after a disaster that authorities were unable to find.

Taiwanese authorities believe Mr Sim and Ms Niu were swept away by a landslide on Shakadang Road during the earthquake, with the man's remains being carried into a ravine by debris flows and river currents.

The Hualien District Court said it would notify Mr Sim's family to arrange the retrieval of his remains, according to local media.

Death certificates issued in December

Taiwanese authorities issued death certificates for Sim and Ms Niu last month because they were unable to find them and she was presumed dead.

The couple's death certificates list their time of death as April 3, the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years.

It triggered landslides that blocked roads and severely damaged buildings around the main city of Hallein. The accident was followed by more than 1,100 thin aftershocks.

More than 1,000 people were injured in the earthquake, with at least 18 deaths.
