The partial remains of the Singaporean couple, who went missing following the Hualien Earthquake on April 3, 2024, were found on January 24, 2025.

Police confirmed that the remains matched those of Sim Hui Kok, 47, who went missing with his wife, Neo Siu Chu, 47, after they were last seen offloading a bus on Chakadang Road in the Taroko Gorge in Hualien just 40 minutes before the quake struck.

These results come about nine months after the earthquake and a month after their families issued death certificates to the couple.

A bone found under a landslide on January 11

A farmer was inspecting and sorting crops near Shakadang Road in Taroko National Park at around 7 a.m. on January 11 when he found a bone in the river bottom beneath the landslide, according to the China Times.

He immediately reported the results to the police.

Police reconnoitered the nearby site where the bone was found, but were unable to find other remains.

After comparing DNA samples, it was confirmed that the remains matched those of Sim on January 24.

The prosecutor suspects that the buried remains may have been washed upriver as hurricane rains fell due to the widespread collapse behind a large water pipe on the road.

The remains will be returned to the family at a later date.

What happened on the day of the earthquake?

The couple was seen getting off the bus on Chakadang Road in Taroko Gorge in Hualien at 7:20 a.m. on April 3, 2024, according to towed vehicle camera footage.

Just 40 minutes later, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan, the worst earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years.

Taroko Valley is located in Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan's nine national parks and a popular tourist destination.

SETN also reported that following the earthquake, search and rescue efforts continued for up to 12 days before being called off with the family's consent.

Search and rescue efforts were suspended due to safety concerns due to aftershocks and landslides.

In a statement, the family thanked the search and rescue team of the Hualien County Fire Department for their efforts.

SETN reported that death certificates issued to the Singaporean couple meant eight people died on Chakadang Road at the time of the quake.

Other victims included a family of five from New Taipei City, and a 21-year-old woman named Ho.

The Hualien District Court issued the couple's death certificates on December 23, 2024, after a request submitted by their family.

This came 265 days after the earthquake.

Their time of death is listed as 12 noon on 3 April 2024.
