Singaporean couple missing after Taiwan earthquake in April 2024: Remains of husband found by farmer

The remains of a Singaporean man who went missing with his wife after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Halin District in April 2024 have been found.

Mr Sim Huy Kok and his wife, Ms Niu Siew Chu, were officially declared dead by the Halmeen District Court at the request of their family in December 2024 – more than 200 days after he was last seen embarking on the Chakadang Trail in Taroko National Park.

According to Taiwanese news outlet, Mr Sim's remains were discovered by a farmer on the morning of January 11 near Wujianwu, about 1.5 km from the entrance to the pass.

The farmer spotted a piece of bone in a riverbed located below an area where a landslide had occurred, and immediately reported it to the authorities.

Local police then followed the farmer to the scene to investigate.

Because the trail was so badly damaged by the quake, it took nearly four hours before the police and forensics team successfully recovered the bones.

Visual assessment concluded that the bone was most likely part of the hip, China Times reported.

The bone was later tested against DNA samples previously collected from the couple's son, who traveled to Taiwan after the tragedy.

On January 24, test results confirmed that the DNA was a match and that the bone indeed belonged to Mr Sim.

Follow-up investigations by local authorities concluded that the earthquake triggered a large landslide behind the water main in the gorge, washing Mr. Sim's body into the river valley.

However, police were unable to find any of the couple's other remains, despite another search around the area where the bone was found.

The family members of Mr Sim and Ms Niu have been informed of these findings by the police and will receive the remains soon, the police report in China Times said.

The pair, who also reportedly have Australian passports, were caught on CCTV exiting a bus on April 3 at about 7.20am near Shakadang Trail, 40 minutes before the Taiwan earthquake 25 years ago.

Search and rescue personnel from the Hualien Fire Department conducted multiple searches of the pair to no avail, with Sniffer dogs also given clothing for Mr Sim and MS Neo to wear to pick up a scent.

Their family members attended a religious ceremony with spiritual arousal rituals performed on April 14, 2024, after the search was suspended due to safety concerns.
