Earthquake 6.2-Magnitede strike

Panda Aceh. The 6.2 earthquake struck the size of Aceh in northern Sumatra on Friday evening, shaking the buildings and leading to panic among the residents who are still shocked by the devastating tsunami 20 years ago.

The earthquake, which struck at 6:03 pm local time, focuses in the southern part of Aceh, about 36 km southwest of Aceh Silatan. The height had a depth of 29 km below the surface of the earth.

According to the Meteorological Agency, Climate Science, and the Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake center was located in the coordinates of 3.15 degrees north and a length of 96.95 degrees east. The Agency also urged the population to adhere to calm and prevent potential final tremors. Although the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat, the authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

The earthquake revived the 2004 Tsunami memories of the Indian Ocean, which destroyed Aceh and its surrounding areas. This catastrophic event, which led to an earthquake 9.1 off the coast of Sumatra, killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia and explained other millions in many countries.

No instant reports indicate victims or major damage from the January 31 earthquake. Local authorities collect information actively and make field assessments. However, the tremor is caused by a state of widespread panic, especially in the areas near the earthquake center.

At H. Yulidin Hospital away in Tapaktuan, dozens of patients and their families rushed from the building during shaking. Many resorted to the hospital yard while waiting for everything.

ACEH (BPBD) confirmed that there have been no reports on deaths or severe structural damage so far. The agency noted that the tremor was perceived in a wide area, including the southern and central coastal areas of Aceh, and even as a field in northern Sumatra.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge the residents to stay aware through official channels.
