The mayor of Santorini says the last earthquake is part of a “seismic swarm”

The population has been warned against avoiding internal gatherings, checking escape methods, moving away from slopes and draining swimming pools to reduce the potential structural damage of buildings in the event of a major earthquake.

The mayor of Santorini said that hundreds of earthquakes that struck the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea are a “seismic swarm” and could last for weeks before they eventually decreased.

“This phenomenon may be played with small or slightly stronger earthquakes, followed by a gradual decline,” said Mayor Nikos Zorzos, adding that he was optimistic about caution after talking to seismologists who described the swarm as a series of similar scales that occur in groups.
