Santorini earthquakes: What causes an “unusual” seismic activity and what is the advice of tourists who visit Greece? | World news

The multiple earthquakes that shake the Greek island of Santorini have pushed thousands of people to flee, and travel to tourists and damaged infrastructure.

An earthquake has been recorded up to five to five in the region since Friday, with the mayor of Al -Jazeera that seismic activity could last for weeks.

Greek Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis has described it as a “very complex and complex geological phenomenon,” according to EPT.

Here is everything you need to know about earthquakes that hit one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.

What is happening?

Hundreds of earthquakes have been recorded with sizes ranging between 3 and 4.9 since Saturday between Santorini and the nearby passion of Amorgos – which are both part of the Cyclades Islands.

There have been 440 other earthquakes less than three and 73 above the size of four since February 1, according to EPT, citing the dynamic institute.

Seismologists have described the event as a series of similar tremors that take place in the groups.

They add that although Greece is not strange to earthquakes, the seismic activity of such hesitation and intensity without being preceded by an extraordinary large earthquake.

The earthquake vehicle is located under the sea floor, which experts said it is good news because it will not be destroyed.

However, there is a possibility that the earthquake will lead to a volcanic or tsunami eruption.

Until now, there has been no significant damage or injuries, although some simple rock slices have occurred and cracks were reported in some old buildings.

She also left the huge spaces of people because of the tactical activity.

Families carrying young children, tourists who are running their bags were filmed, and parking lots were filled with cars that belong to those who left through the ferry.

A number of schools have also been closed across many Greek islands.

Why does that happen?

Earthquakes occur when tectonic panels move suddenly along the rift line, which releases energy in the form of seismic waves.

The shake that results from these waves is what we feel during the earthquake.

The rift line that produces current earthquakes in the Greek islands extends for 120 km (75 miles), but the part has been activated between Santorini and Amersus so far.

Experts are still trying to determine whether multiple earthquakes are the introduction – smaller earthquakes before a large height – or whether it is part of an earthquake swarm of smaller earthquakes that can last for weeks or months.

“There is no technology or a dangerous approach to be able to predict what will happen from here,” said Costas Papazatos, a professor of applied geophysics and seismology at the University of Thessaloniki.

How possible is the volcanic activity?

Santorini is located along the volcanic arc in the south of the Aegean Sea, a series of volcanoes that extend from Biloponiz in southern Greece through the Cyclades Islands.

The island also contains Caldira – a large circular hollow that remains when the central part of the volcano falls after a bite.

Last week, the Ministry of Climate and Civil Protection in Greece announced that the sensors had taken a “seismic-soaphysical activity” inside Caldira.

There are two types of volcanoes in the area: Nea Kamena, which is located inside Caldera's Santorini's Caldera and Kolumbo, a below sea volcano about 8 km (5 miles) northeast of the island.

There is also the volcanic balla ina is the volcanic island.

Scientists have since said that the current earthquakes have nothing to do with volcanic activity.

Effhymios Lekkas, the earthquake scientist and head of the Scientific Observatory Committee of the Arch of the Aegean Sea, added that 3000 years have passed since the last explosion.

“We have a very long time before we face a big explosion,” he said.

Advice for tourists

In an update to visitors on Tuesday, the Santorini government warned hotels and all types of tourist residence “to inform its visitors of avoiding dangerous points on the island.”

The UK Foreign Ministry also shared a warning from the Greek Civil Protection Ministry of advising people “not to attend large internal gatherings and avoid old or abandoned buildings.”

People were notified of avoiding Amudi, Armeni, Korfos ports and the old port in the Fira area and choosing safe roads when traveling, especially in areas where the risk of land collapse is high.

“In the event of a strong tremor, people should leave the coastal areas immediately,” the ministry said.

Payment alerts were also sent to mobile phones, and hotels were urged to drain swimming pools because water movement in a major earthquake can destabilize buildings.

One of the residents who was already evacuated is the tourist guide Kostas Sakavaras who told Sky News' The World With Yalda Hakim that his family fled to Athens as a “preventive measure.”

“It is a nerve items to have every few minutes to have some tremor, although it is not very devastating,” he said.

He added that he had “an increasing feeling of more people leaving the island.”

How long will the tremors continue?

At a press conference on Wednesday, Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis said it was “more optimistic” than yesterday about earthquakes that do not cause greater tremors, but he was unable to make any fixed predictions.

“The population will continue to feel vibrations for the next time period, and they should remain calm about it,” added Kostas Papazachos, Professor of Geophysics and Seismology.

“The situation seems to move towards a better scenario regarding seismic activity.”

The earthquake and protection organization said last week that the seismic center in the Aegean Sea was moving north away from Santorini.

He stressed that there was no connection to the sleeping volcanoes in the area.

Some of the island's residents decided to stay in their homes while seismic activity continues.

“The older population is getting used to earthquakes,” said retired police officer and ship's Panagiotis Hatzigeorgiou, who lived in Santorini for more than three decades.

He said: “But it is different this time. It is not itself to have earthquakes every two to three minutes. The main thing is not worried,” adding: “Now we can listen to music alone and eat coffee ourselves.”
