Santorini earthquakes, the driving of the tourist exit from the volcanic island of Greece

LONDON – Tourists continued to escape from the Greek island of Santorini on Wednesday – a fourth consecutive day of the exit that ignited a series of earthquakes that rocked the destination of the famous European holidays incredibly. “I understand the fear of what this means at the present time is to be in Santorini moving constantly,” said Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis, as he urges the residents to keep his calm and follow any instructions provided by officials.

Experts told Agence France -Presse that the region had not experienced such intense seismic activity since the start of the records in 1964.

Santorini has been sitting over a volcano that has not exploded since 1950, but a committee of experts said on Monday that the current seismic rash “was not associated with volcanic activity.”

About 3.4 million people visited Santorini in 2023, according to Agence France Presse.

Panagiotis Hatzigeorgou, a retired police officer and a ship worker who lived on the island for more than 30 years, told AP that he will not leave, despite their calls to stay with relatives in the Greek capital, Athens.

“The oldest population gets used to earthquakes,” he said. “But it's different this time. It is not itself to have earthquakes every two to three minutes.”
