The death toll from the Venezuela earthquake exceeds 5,000, while the International Monetary Fund issues emergency aid Earthquake news

The International Monetary Fund disburses $346 million in emergency funds as new details emerge about the disaster response.

The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela’s coast on the Caribbean Sea last month has exceeded 5,000, while authorities continue to recover bodies from under the rubble.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Friday that 5,119 people had been confirmed dead so far, most of them in the coastal state of La Guaira, where the earthquakes caused the worst devastation. Another 16,740 people were infected, although Rodriguez said most have since been released from hospital.

The death toll continued to rise as rescue teams removed collapsed buildings and reached areas that had been difficult to reach in the chaotic days that followed the disaster.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which struck each other within a minute on June 24, destroyed the city of La Guaira, north of Caracas. The coastal state includes Venezuela’s main international airport, a major seaport and hundreds of residential towers, many of which have partially or completely collapsed.

Authorities say more than 1,300 aftershocks have been recorded since then. Nearly 20,000 people remain displaced, many of them living in overcrowded shelters without access to clean water or sanitation.

$346 million in financing from the International Monetary Fund

The grim achievement comes as interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced on Friday that Venezuela had received $346 million in emergency financing from the International Monetary Fund.

Kristalina Georgieva, Director of the International Monetary Fund, confirmed that funds were released from the Fund’s Venezuelan reserve tranche to meet urgent humanitarian needs.

The International Monetary Fund and World Bank only restored relations with Venezuela in April, after the United States forcefully removed former President Nicolas Maduro from power in January. The institutions suspended their relations with the country in 2019 after refusing to recognize the Maduro government.

Public anger over the government’s handling of the earthquakes continued to grow in the weeks after they struck, with survivors and critics accusing authorities of responding too slowly as people remained trapped under collapsed buildings.

The new details revealed by Reuters increased these questions. In an investigation published on Saturday, the news agency found that the crucial first days of the rescue effort were hampered by delayed military deployment orders, a shortage of basic rescue equipment, and confusion caused by an overlapping chain of command, according to military and diplomatic sources.

Rodriguez repeatedly rejected accusations that the authorities were slow to act, dismissing allegations of chaos as a narrative created by “media laboratories” and insisting that the government responded quickly.
