Santorini earthquakes send thousands of fleeing Greek tourist sanctuaries: “The entire island is mobilized”

Thousands of people fled from Santorini Island as hundreds of earthquakes continued on the path through the famous Greek tourist destination.

More than 6000 residents have left the island in recent days, according to the Greek year of ERT. Early on Tuesday morning, hundreds of people with their luggage were seen waiting in a port on the island, pending the transfer of the ferry to Athens.

A 4.8 tremor was recorded early on Tuesday, just shy of 4.9 earthquakes that were recorded during the weekend – the strongest so far. Over the past three days, about 550 tremors have been registered in the Aegean Sea, between Santorini, Amorgos and nearby iOS.

The Greek Earth Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) has estimated that intense seismic activity could last for several other days, if not weeks.

Santorini, which is called “Instagram” in Greece, attracts about 3.4 million visitors annually, but it is home to about 20,000 permanent population. Many of these decided to escape from the island for the safety of the mainland.

“I work on the island,” said Julian Sinnaj, a 35 -year -old population.

On Monday, Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis urged the population to remain calm because the authorities deal with a “very extensive geological phenomenon.”

Additional flights have been announced to help the residents reach safety, with 15 Santorini flights to Athens, scheduled for Tuesday. Schools on the island will remain closed until Friday, and residents are advised to avoid large internal gatherings.

“Everything is closed. No one is working now. I have emptied the entire island,” Derry, a 18 -year -old, told Reuters.

Santorini sits near the boundaries of the huge African tectonic paintings, not strange to tremors, although seismic seismic events like this are rare.

The island is famous for Caldera – a hole in the form of a bowl caused by a volcanic eruption – which was formed by one of the largest explosions known for about 3,600 years.

The latest major earthquake in Santorini – with 7.5 degrees – in 1956, killing at least 53 people and wounding more than 100 others.
