Santorini earthquakes – tremors indicate a high volcanic magma

Professor Costas Sinocracy appreciated the nature of Santorini's earthquakes on Friday in the Aegean Sea indicating “the rise of volcanic magma.”

Speaking to the public broadcaster Ert on Saturday morning, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Southern California, and a member of the Athens Academy confirmed that “although the tremors stopped within an hour and a half, it was clear that this was purely volcanic earthquake.”

Synolakis explained that a volcanic squadron – thousands of tremors inside a relatively small size – has been recorded, adding that scientists are now examining additional parameters.

The professor noted that the time has come to hold a broader meeting that includes foreign experts with relevant experience, noting that “we cannot rely only on the 2011 experience. We need to compare this phenomenon with dozens of other cases to understand where we go.”

Discussing the frequency and nature of seismic activity, Synolakis mentioned that it seems to be a decrease, indicating an improvement in the situation. “We cannot assume that things only improve the number of earthquakes. If its nature changes very quickly and becomes clear volcanic, the phenomenon must be reassessed.”

Synolakis repeated that since the beginning of Santorini earthquakes, these earthquakes may not be tectonic but related to volcanic activity.
