Saldanha explained that “the solar heat pushes changes at the temperature of the atmosphere, which in turn can affect things such as the properties of rocks and underground water movement.”

“These fluctuations can make the rocks more fragile and prone to breakage, for example – changes in rain and melting snow can change the pressure of the boundaries of the tectonic sheets.

“While these factors may not be the main engines of earthquakes, they still play a role that can help predict seismic activity.”

In fact, the team noticed, when they feed on the details of the surface temperature to earthquakes, this became more accurate – especially in the case of shallow earthquakes.

“This is logical, because heat and water often affects the upper layers of the Earth's crust,” Saldan said.
