“It is interesting to know that the island is open again and we visit it first,” said Deborah Terry, 67.

Another passenger, Jolly, said that she was confident that the island was out of danger.

“We trust the Tourism Council here, so if they say it is safe to come, we have come with open arms.”

An island with about 20,000 population, Santorini has taken its current form after one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history around 1600 BC. It is welcomed by about 2.5 million tourists every year and its economy depends almost exclusively on tourism.

Local residents said they were hanging their hopes of visitors' return to the island.

“We all hope that things will return to normal, and people will return,” said Tasus Konos, a store owner. “The cloud seems to be raised.”

No major damage was reported on the island after earthquakes, but the authorities said that they would create an evacuation port to facilitate the safe escape of people in the event of a larger earthquake.
