The Myanmar Military Council continued to bomb parts of the war -torn country even after the most powerful earthquake for more than a century that left hundreds of dead and millions.
The 7.7 -year -old earthquake struck in central Myanmar on Friday and sent a strong tremor to the neighboring China and Thailand. The military -running government said on Sunday that at least 1,700 people were confirmed in Myanmar alone, 3,400 people were injured, and more than 300 people were missing.
The earthquake was the largest that struck Myanmar since 1912, according to the geological survey of the United States, and it destroyed the civil infrastructure, including the main highway that extends to the country's backbone. Many of the most affected areas have been reached by official agencies, as most rescue efforts by the local population remove the rubble by hand.
Through the border in Bangkok, the rescuers raced to find the survivors trapped under the rubble of a 33 -storey skyscraper. At least 17 people were killed in the Thai capital with 32 injuries and 83 are still missing from Sunday evening.
Tom Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur in Myanmar, said that at least three government air strikes were carried out on the largely controlled epic area, the earthquake center, hours after it was beaten on Friday. “I call on the military council to stop, and to stop any of its military operations. This is completely heavy and unacceptable.”
The Irrawaddy News newspaper also reported that the army made air strikes on civilians in the town of Chaung-U in Sagaing on Friday evening, just two hours after hitting the earthquake.

The National Unity Government (NUG), the government in exile that represents the civil administration led by Aung San Suu Ki, toppled in the 2021 coup, the army's Note as “inhuman” to strike during an unprecedented natural disaster.
A spokesman for the Nug Zaw Kyaw Independent told that it was “beyond the words” that the military council was “benefiting” from the earthquake to strike the targets in the rebel -controlled Myanmar regions.
He said: “Myanmar was injured by the strongest earthquake in the modern history of Myanmar, with the loss of lives, many missing persons, and the impact of millions.”
He said: “Unfortunately, we used to hear and see reports that our military council, even after hours of hitting destroyed earthquakes, are still carrying out air strikes against civil targets in the liberated areas controlled by the resistance.”
“It is incredible. It is inhuman – inhuman from this army and its leaders. It is not surprising that they do not care about the lives of people.”
NUS announced on Saturday evening a temporary stopper from “offensive military operations, with the exception of defense measures” in the areas affected by the earthquake, starting on Sunday.

The advertisement said that his armed wing, the Popular Defense Force, “will cooperate with United Nations and non -governmental organizations to ensure security and transportation and the establishment of temporary rescue and medical camps” in the areas in which they control.
The statement said: “We call on all ethnic groups and citizens to actively cooperate with the revolutionary forces and the revolutionary forces in providing comprehensive assistance to save emergency and relief to the victims of the earthquake.”
On Friday, the earthquake forced the leader of the military council, General Min Aung Haning, to issue a rare appeal for international assistance, and the army allowed foreign governments to send their relief workers to the country for the first time since the coup of 2021.
Jolly Bishop, the UN Secretary -General of the United Nations in Myanmar, urged both sides to stop hostilities so that the aid could reach those affected by the earthquake.
Speaking to the Australian on Saturday, the former Australian government minister warned that the disaster would increase its misfortune in a critical situation of the people of Myanmar.
“The situation has now become more urgent and disastrous and I call on all parties to conflict to stop all violence now so that we can focus our attention, resources and effort to help these people in urgent need.”
The independent arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Myanmar to comment.
