Myanmar Junta was accused of banning aid to the earthquake victims, while continuing air strikes Myanmar
The Myanmar Army faces criticism about the continuation of air strikes and claims to prevent aid to survivors from the earthquake, as international agencies have urged “unrestricted access” to humanitarian aid in the nation -based nation.
The 7.7 -year -old earthquake, which struck in central Myanmar on Friday, caused widespread destruction, killing more than 2000 people and leaving the affected areas in urgent need of basic necessities such as food and water.
Two doctors in Australia were accused of coordinating the response to emergency situations at the Pyralaay and Epic Center, the Council of the Council to prohibit aid supplies in emergency situations.
“Some of the aid supplies, most of them, have not been granted to the people they needed. In some areas in Mandalay, aid has not reached. Aid was confiscated by the Military Council,” said Dr. Nang Win.
Since the earthquake hit, Dr. Nang has been communicating with colleagues in Mandalay, saying that aid was rare and temporary clinics were being created instead of the appropriate emergency response system.
She said that one of his medical colleagues in the city had signed papers to receive $ 1,000 as aid, but he received only about $ 100 of this, claiming that the handatory supplies may end in the black market.
And she said, “Then there is a market that happens and they must wrap and buy them.”
Since the army in Myanmar seized power in the February 2021 coup, the armed resistance movement, which consists of various ethnic groups, has been closed in a chaotic and deadly civil war. Over the past year, Junta was constantly losing to the ground, controlling less than 30 % of the country's lands, although it reserves the control of the largest cities.
Dr. Nang said that in areas where the army had no full control, the army was preventing aid and preventing rescue teams from entering. She said: “If a group of rescuers comes and says we want to enter, especially in Sagaing, they will not allow you, they will say that you need a permit and once you get a time it's too late.”
A junta spokesman did not immediately respond to the claims.
Dr. Ton Aung Shui, the Australian doctor and representative of the national unity government in Myanmar (NG), said that the army was taking advantage of checkpoints to prevent the flowing drug to the areas controlled by the ethnic resistance groups.
“Outside the main cities, the army is already investigating and then trying to prevent the flow of aid,” he said, adding that local communities have had to search for alternative roads.
“They find other ways. So they reach there, but it takes longer.”
He said that emergency aid was banned on areas such as the epic and Mugoy.
The claims come at a time when the Military Council is criticizing the air strikes on the villages.
“The Military Council is still carrying out air strikes targeting civilian areas, even when the population suffers greatly from the earthquake.”
International agencies have condemned the response.
Tom Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur in Myanmar, said that confirmation that what was happening on the ground was a challenge due to the interruption of communications, but there were “consistent reports on its ban” and that the air strikes were continuing.
He said: “Instead of focusing every ounce of energy, attention and resources on saving lives, the military council takes lives. This is the first thing. Second, there were fixed reports on the prohibition of aid, and relief workers who are refused to reach checkpoints.”
He said that these reports came out of the areas under the control of the opposition or the disputed, adding that the army should “stop killing people and focus on saving people.”
On Monday night, air strikes were reported in the town of Singo, Mandalay, and the town of Nuengku, Shan State.
“The Myanmar Military Council is still calling for fear, even in the wake of a horrific natural catastrophe that killed thousands,” said Brioni Lao, a deputy director of Asia in Human Rights Watch.
“JUNTA needs to be separated from its horrific previous practice and ensuring that humanitarian aid quickly reaches those whose lives are at risk of an earthquake.”
Scott Marcel, a retired American diplomat and ambassador in Myanmar from 2016-2020, said the army had a bad record when it was about providing assistance to its needy citizens.
“Myanmar has a very poor infrastructure, and the military government, where it controls things, [it] He said, “It will not raise a big finger for help,” it is a really bad place to happen. “
During the roaming epidemic, he said that the army strongly restricted the aid, as it often provides oxygen only for its supporters. During a nargis in 2008, a catastrophe that killed nearly 140,000 people, military leaders initially rejected all international aid.
“Their history shows that they are primarily prepared to stand by a lot of suffering and even death, if they do not harm themselves, instead of doing anything that may risk their place,” Marcel said.
